The Hidden Responsibilities of Growing a Business

People networking at The Offices - Meeting Spaces, Events

Why business growth changes more than your bottom line.

When people think about growing a business, the conversation usually centers around the milestones. Landing a new client, hiring another employee, moving into a larger office, or reaching a new revenue goal are all exciting moments because they represent years of hard work finally paying off.

I've found myself thinking less about those milestones over the years and more about everything they bring with them.

When you're first starting out, most of the decisions you make feel personal. You're trying to build something that supports your family, creates opportunities, and gives you the chance to do work you're proud of. As the business grows, though, your perspective naturally begins to change. Before long, your decisions are affecting more than just your own future. They affect the people who work alongside you, the families they go home to every night, and the customers who continue placing their trust in your business.

It's a responsibility I don't think many business owners fully understand until they're living it themselves.

There's a verse that's stayed with me for years: "To whom much is given, much is required." The older I get, the more I appreciate what that really means. Business growth isn't simply about reaching the next milestone. It's about becoming a better steward of the people who have trusted you with part of their lives.

Looking back, I think that's when my definition of success started to change. Early in business, it was easy to measure progress by new clients, bigger projects, or a growing bank account because those were the milestones I was working toward. Those things still matter, but they aren't what I think about first anymore. Today, I think about the people. I think about creating a place where employees enjoy coming to work, where customers know they'll be taken care of, and where the decisions we make today continue strengthening the business for years to come.

One of the things I've come to appreciate is that, for many business owners, there comes a point when success starts feeling less like a personal achievement and more like a responsibility to the people around you. That's when leadership begins to look a little different. It becomes less about chasing the next opportunity and more about creating stability, earning trust, and making decisions with the long term in mind.

That's also one of the reasons I enjoy being part of The Offices at 31. Every day, I have the opportunity to spend time around entrepreneurs and business owners who are building something meaningful. Some are launching their first business, while others have spent decades growing companies that support employees, serve customers, and strengthen our local economy. Their businesses may look different, but many of them are carrying the same responsibility, and something is encouraging about working alongside people who genuinely understand that journey.

Running a small business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also feel isolating at times. That's why I've always believed there's value in being surrounded by other professionals who celebrate your wins, understand the difficult days, and are willing to share what they've learned along the way. Some of the best conversations I've had haven't happened in scheduled meetings. They've happened while grabbing a cup of coffee, passing someone in the hallway, or catching up between appointments.

Those moments are a good reminder that a great workspace offers more than four walls and a desk. It gives people the opportunity to build relationships, exchange ideas, and become part of something bigger than themselves.
